Have you ever had anyone just give you a gift out of the blue? Nothing huge, just a sweet little token of their love. Maybe it was a bracelet they made, or a letter they took time to write in their nicest handwriting and then decorate with a swirly border. Something that made your heart warm, knowing you had a friend who loved you so much.
Or, rather than the giftee, have you been the gifter? Spending time you have to spare working on a special project for that friend you so greatly appreciate. You cannot wait until you see them next, and you hand them the little special thing you have made for them. Whatever amount of time you spent on it will be worth it when you see your beloved friend’s face light up with joy when they open the box or envelope you have just handed them.
Personally, I often find myself being the gifter. I think it is the strong maternal instinct in me that loves to do things for other people. Eloise the Elephant, for example, was not a gift with a purpose. Just a little present to show her how much I love her baby. And I think I got more joy out of giving it than she did receiving it, I loved seeing the look on her face when I presented her with the stuffed animal I had worked so hard on.
A small gift for a friend can be anything. This spring, I think that gifts should be given more frequently. Why wait for a birthday or gift-giving holiday to give your best friend a framed photograph of the two of you? Just print off the photo, buy a frame at Target, and ba-da-boom! A lovely gift! It’s only purpose is to tell your friend that you love them.
